Helena Bonham Carter Contacted a Psychic to Get in Touch With Princess Margaret

In headlines you never saw coming, esteemed British actress Helena Bonham Carter reportedly employed the services of a psychic to reach out to Princess Margaret.

Bonham Carter was cast as the late Royal in the upcoming 3rd and 4th seasons of Netflix’s The Crown.

Seeking Royal Approval

Although the living members of the Royal Family have publicly stated that they view The Crown as little more than a fictional soap opera, Bonham Carter wanted to be as accurate as possible in her portrayal of Princess Margaret.

She spoke to the late Princess’s friends and ladies-in-waiting, as well as reading multiple biographies.

But then she decided to reach out to Margaret’s spirit via a team of psychics.

“My main thing when you play someone who is real, you kind of want their blessing because you have a responsibility,” the Oscar-winning actress explained at the Cheltenham Literature Festival.

Bonham Carter asked Princess Margaret if she was “OK with me playing you,” and the Royal allegedly said that Bonham Carter was “better than the other actress.”

While we don’t know of any other big names who were in contention for the role, it does seem like a very catty compliment. Margaret was known for “complimenting you and putting you down at the same time,” the actress said.

The late princess even had some pointers on how to play the role correctly on The Crown. Bonham Carter told festival-goers:
“Then she said: ‘But you’re going to have to brush up and be more groomed and neater.’ Then she said: ‘Get the smoking right. I smoked in a very particular way. Remember that – this is a big note – the cigarette holder was as much a weapon for expression as it was for smoking.’”

Not Her First Royal Role

Ironically enough, Bonham Carter previously played Margaret and Elizabeth’s mother–affectionately known as “the Queen Mum”–in the film The King’s Speech.

Helena Bonham Carter is a noted kook, whose personal style straddles the border between Goth and Bag Lady. She was in a long-term relationship with spooky director Tim Burton and starred in a string of his films, including Alice in Wonderland and Sweeney Todd.

She’s best known to younger audiences as Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter films, but she has a long and celebrated career as an actress in prestige historical dramas and modern classics like Fight Club.

Who Was Princess Margaret?

Princess Margaret was a notorious figure in modern British history. The younger sister and only sibling of Queen Elizabeth, she was a rebellious “party princess” who hobnobbed with famous actors and musicians.

The young princess had a public romance with her father’s equerry (a high-ranking personal secretary), Peter Townsend, who was 16 years older than her.

At the time they met, he was married with 2 young children. Royal biographers argue whether the pair became romantically involved before or after his divorce in 1952, but ultimately the Queen asked her sister to wait a few years before deciding to marry.

Documents revealed in 2004 showed that Margaret and Townsend could have married–if they’d agreed to renounce her title and essentially live as a commoner.

Instead, she married Anthony Armstrong-Jones in 1960, but the marriage was not a happy one and they divorced in 1976.

Margaret passed away in 2002, at the age of 71, after nearly two decades of poor health, likely due to her lifelong smoking habit.
