Royal Roundup: The Crown, Battle of Brothers, and More!

It’s been an exceptional month for royal gossip. The juiciest tidbits are from biographer Robert Lacey’s new book, Battle of Brothers: William and Harry – The Inside Story of a Family in Tumult. With a title that long, you know there’s going to be hot gossip inside. We’ve also got the new trailer for season four of The Crown, which looks thrilling, and more controversy about Meghan.

‘Battle of Brothers’ Isn’t as Pro-Cambridge as We Thought

When Robert Lacey announced his new book, royal gossips assumed it would be a rebuttal of Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand’s Finding Freedom: Harry and Meghan and the Making of a Modern Royal Family. Lacey is an old-school royal biographer and journalist, and it seemed likely that he’d be taking a pro-Cambridge stance.

While the book does tell the “other side” of Harry and Meghan’s exit from the royal family, it’s not exactly a flattering portrait of William and Kate. The excerpts released so far have painted William as a rage-addled, jealous diva who has to be soothed by his future queen.

Lacey stopped just shy of accusing Kate of stalking her future husband, too. He laid out the timeline of their courtship, including the way that Kate changed universities in order to follow William.

He also refreshed our collective memory about the time she wore a see-through dress at a fashion show where William was in the audience and finagled her way into being the only girl in their shared house so that she could prove her skills as a hostess and homemaker.

Season Four of ‘The Crown’ Is a Dark Fairy Tale

Have you seen the trailer for The Crown yet? It’s cut together like a thriller–or perhaps a horror film. It’s impossible to look away from Emma Corrin as Princess Diana. I can’t get over how much she resembles Diana. Notice how she’s the only point of bright color in a dim, dark, drab world? That’s not a coincidence.

The buzz so far has all been about Gillian Anderson’s turn as Margaret Thatcher. However, don’t be surprised if Corrin ends up winning–or at least being nominated for–a slew of awards. It’s such a strong cast, and I can’t wait to see how Diana’s story plays out.

Season five will see Elizabeth Debicki stepping into the role, presumably as the post-divorce Diana.

Meghan Accused of Courting Drama on Purpose

Another royal biographer is making headlines this week with her claims about Meghan. Lady Colin Campbell had some thoughts about the American duchess, whom she claimed only married Harry as part of a plan to “make her into the most famous person on Earth.”

Lady Campbell also claimed that Meghan intentionally stirred up controversy in order to raise her own profile. She told Graham Norton that it was “a very deliberate policy. And it has to involve a tremendous amount of controversy — otherwise you’re just not that famous.”

The same is true about minor royal biographers promoting their upcoming books, presumably.
